I'm tired of winter. I want this.

Triple happiness

Three of my favourite things in one cute package: Rilakkuma, chocolate and a book. It's not a real book, but it's close enough.

Let's go pink

Pink omikuji (おみくじ, fortunes written on pieces of paper) and pink plum blossoms at Kameido Tenjin. You choose your omikuji randomly from a box. If it's bad luck, you tie it to a frame at the shrine so that it remains there instead of accompanying you.

I ♥ the shitamachi

"Downtown" is an American English word that refers to a city's central business district. As far as I know, it's seldom, if ever, used in British English. It also happens to be the direct translation of shitamachi, as the low-lying eastern side of Tokyo is called. (Shita  means below, down, under; machi  is town.) That's why this poster reads I ♥ DOWNTOWN. I live in the shitamachi. I ♥ the shitamachi very much and my life here is a very happy event, but I assure you, the American meaning does not apply. Fortunately.

Silent apology

Daien-ji, a temple in Meguro, was the flash point of a fire that burned one third of old Edo and killed nearly 18 000 people in 1772. These rakan, five hundred in total, were carved by the temple's monks as a form of penance.

Fishy photos for Lina

I know a certain demanding person in Malaysia. She writes great blogs. When Lina saw my Gunma snow fishing photos, she said, "Where's the fish?!" I've selected four photos from various fishpeditions. There are many more, but four should suffice. You can read the story linked to the last photo here.

Where there be dragons

Dragons at Daien-ji and Meguro Fudōson, both in Meguro. It's the year of the dragon, after all ...

Taiko drummer

This photo was taken at the Tokyo National Museum during a performance by a group called Obiki. Don't be misled by his outfit: it was a freezing cold January morning. Drumming keeps you warm. Participants and audience.

Everybody has his favourite coffee

Offerings at graves in Tokyo, probably the deceased's favourite, probably placed there by relatives.
